My husband and I were on our way back to Portland Maine after enjoying Christmas Eve and Christmas morning in Boston with family.

We had made reservations at The iconic White Barn Inn for 3:00 for Christmas dinner.

There are so many excellent dining spots in Portland that we had never been to the "White Barn Inn"

This seemed a great opportunity.

We were warmly greeted at the front steps by staff members. Which felt very gracious and welcoming.

we were led into the dining room and seated at a table for two.

The ambiance was old world and formal but warm, relaxing and intimate.

We each started off with a Hendrix dry martini. and delicate Maine lobster spring rolls in a Thai inspired spicy sweet sauce.

I chose the classic Beef Wellington with Madeira sauce and vegetable medley, one  of their classic signature dishes. My husband chose the "Steamed Maine Lobster nestled on a bed of homemade fettuccine with carrot, snow peas, and cognac coral butter sauce. This was also a signature dish.

we had paired wine servings as well.

The lobster is taken out of its shell and placed elegantly on top of the fettuccine!

Our server had carefully taken care of ordering our dessert souffles at the beginning of the meal,

so they were ready when we were.

After that I couldn't stop myself from sampling the Christmas pudding.

It was  prix fixe after all!

It was just a short drive home to Yarmouth, Maine. where we could hear the waves lapping outside.

It had been one of the warmest Christmas days on record in Portland Maine, a high of 55 degrees.

No wonder so many folks from "away" are finding it irresistible to snap up the real estate in Maine! Whether it be waterfront property or that "Uniquely Portland City condo or loft"

More next time on the burgeoning loft and condo scene on Portland's Peninsula especially on the "'Eastern Promenade".

The cabinetry is custom in rich cherry and maple,
Exquisitely partnered with contemporary stone countertops and high tech appliances.
The adjacent  first floor master suite,  is beautifully private, with floor to ceiling glass, (outfitted with sleek Hunter Douglas sheer blinds) overlooking  gardens and golf course

The home is heated by oil currently but has propane access because of the on demand seamless generator.
There has been impeccable attention to maintenance and all mechanicals are excellent.
The lot is in a "coveted" location in the Woodlands and allows for much privacy from the street because of the orientation of the home to the rear overlooking the golf course. The gardens have a professionally installed irrigation system.

Important Things To Consider In Your Search For A Retirement Condo

by Deborah Barouch

Vehicle / Storage and Garage Space...
In my initial meeting with clients I ask how important use of a vehicle is to them?  Do they  need the comfort of having a garage attached to their condo/loft or at least nearby?  If they say it is very important, I suggest that they check out condos with in 10 - 15 minutes  away from the downtown peninsula area, or choose a high rise that has underground parking or at least adjacent parking to the building.  A number of city lofts have no parking except on street parking.

Stairs / Elevator Access...

Many retirees are retiring early in their 50's,  some are in their 60's and 70's.  All of them wish to remain healthy , so walking to nearby stores and restaurants fulfills a need, incorporating fitness in their lifestyle. But the question remains, how many stairs can you handle? Or do you need single level living with elevator access.

Portland Maine has some of the oldest housing stock in the nation.  Many of the older more charming renovated buildings have multiple stairs in many cases. This can be very challenging in making the correct condo/loft choice.

Retiring To A City Loft Or Condo In Portland, Maine?

by Deborah Barouch

This year I have had the pleasure of helping a number of folks choose condos/lofts as their real estate choice in Portland.  They typically are choosing it as a pied-a-terre, because they have another home elsewhere.

Most, not all, are choosing the city condo or loft as their winter home of choice.

They seek out the city because of its high walkability score ( that allows for enjoyment of the arts, symphony and trendy restaurants close by.  Portland, Maine has a vibrant year round community and these retirees want that sustainable lifestyle that they can count on.  Another factor is the high quality of the medical system here in Portland Maine.

The Bay House, Chandlers Wharf, Chesnut Street Lofts and now more choices coming up on Munjoy Hill, Munjoy Heights, and the Marquis Lofts are becoming popular retirement choices.  Frequently this is a second home lifestyle purchase and in many cases, it is their winter home of choice!
Some of the features buyers are seeking include areas with a high "walkability" score, allowing ease to enjoy the culture of the city of Portland and all its amenities.  Ample parking, maintenance free living and easy home access.
