Important Things To Consider In Your Search For A Retirement Condo

by Deborah Barouch

Vehicle / Storage and Garage Space...
In my initial meeting with clients I ask how important use of a vehicle is to them?  Do they  need the comfort of having a garage attached to their condo/loft or at least nearby?  If they say it is very important, I suggest that they check out condos with in 10 - 15 minutes  away from the downtown peninsula area, or choose a high rise that has underground parking or at least adjacent parking to the building.  A number of city lofts have no parking except on street parking.

Stairs / Elevator Access...

Many retirees are retiring early in their 50's,  some are in their 60's and 70's.  All of them wish to remain healthy , so walking to nearby stores and restaurants fulfills a need, incorporating fitness in their lifestyle. But the question remains, how many stairs can you handle? Or do you need single level living with elevator access.

Portland Maine has some of the oldest housing stock in the nation.  Many of the older more charming renovated buildings have multiple stairs in many cases. This can be very challenging in making the correct condo/loft choice.

Retiring To A City Loft Or Condo In Portland, Maine?

by Deborah Barouch

This year I have had the pleasure of helping a number of folks choose condos/lofts as their real estate choice in Portland.  They typically are choosing it as a pied-a-terre, because they have another home elsewhere.

Most, not all, are choosing the city condo or loft as their winter home of choice.

They seek out the city because of its high walkability score (walkscore.com) that allows for enjoyment of the arts, symphony and trendy restaurants close by.  Portland, Maine has a vibrant year round community and these retirees want that sustainable lifestyle that they can count on.  Another factor is the high quality of the medical system here in Portland Maine.

In my next blog I will highlight the questions that retirees need to ask themselves to make a successful purchase.

Portland's Flourishing Retirement Scene

by Deborah Barouch

This year I have been privileged to work with a number of buyers who are attempting to carve out a retirement to best suite their lifestyles.  In most cases, this involves choosing to purchase real estate, a loft or condo, in our vibrant city of Portland, Maine. The what and where are important.

The Bay House, Chandlers Wharf, Chesnut Street Lofts and now more choices coming up on Munjoy Hill, Munjoy Heights, and the Marquis Lofts are becoming popular retirement choices.  Frequently this is a second home lifestyle purchase and in many cases, it is their winter home of choice!
Some of the features buyers are seeking include areas with a high "walkability" score, allowing ease to enjoy the culture of the city of Portland and all its amenities.  Ample parking, maintenance free living and easy home access.
